Leica i9 concept pairs $1,000 camera with $200 iPhone

26 Apr

When you think of manufacturers that create products to go hand-in-hand with the Apple iPhone tech gadgets, Leica probably wouldn’t come to mind.

The seemingly brilliant minds at Black Design Associates hope to change that, however. The Leica i9 concept pairs an iPhone 4 with a fixed-lens rangefinder camera, and the result is nothing short of extraordinary.

Slipping your iPhone 4 — black or white — into the back of the i9 brings the camera to life, activating the compact optical zoom, dedicated aperture and shutter dials, flash and light meter. Images are instantly viewable on the iPhone, where it’s safe to assume they’re stored as well.

The camera back doubles as a case, but you’re probably going to want to use it with a headset, unless you like talking to a camera. There’s no sign that the i9 tech gadgets will even reach the prototype phase, but nobody is going to stop the high-end camera’s designer from dreaming — especially when said dreams make us weak at the knees.

White iPhone 4 Could Arrive within Weeks

15 Apr

The White iPhone 4 has been very elusive over the last 9 to 10 months. It was first announced along with the regular iPhone 4 tech gadgets and since then, it has been delayed over and over to a point where most people believe Apple wont bother with the device and instead launch a white iPhone 5 in the next few months.

Bloomberg is now reporting that “three people with knowledge of the plans” have said the white iPhone will be launching within the next few weeks, before the end of April.

The new version of the smartphone is expected to arrive on both the AT&T network as well as Verizon network. The report doesn’t tell us if international locations will get the device, but we suspect they will in time.

We also hear that Apple could be pushing the launch of the device so that it takes the pressure off the launch of the iPhone 5 tech gadgets later this year. By selling a lot of white iPhone 4′s, it would lower the demand for the iPhone 5 a little and help keep the shortages down to a minimum.

Reasons for the delay have never been officially announced, but have been hinted as being problems with the white coloring, problems with peeling, problems with the flash leaking as well as sensor problems. Perhaps these are all good guesses, but I doubt Apple will make any official announcement regarding this.

Price wise, expect them to cost the same as the regular black versions of the same tech gadgets.

iPhone 5 Rumor Du Jour: Metal Backing

22 Mar

There’s so much speculation about the iPhone 5 right now, and brace yourselves — you’re bound to hear even more rumors before things get official. Case in point: today’s rumor says that the iPhone 5 will look just like the  tech gadgets of iPhone 4, except it will come with a metal backing (looking similar to this accessorized iPhone 4) and have a slightly larger four-inch screen. As you know, the glass backing on the iPhone 4 is super fragile, so using a stronger material will benefit both Apple and customers alike.

The iPhone 5 is said to be hitting production status soon, which would put it on track for a Summer release.

White iPhone Coming in the Spring

15 Mar

Excited News:

Phil Schiller has confirmed on Twitter that the white iPhone will be made available in the sprint.

@airickanderson Hi Eric. The white iPhone will be available this spring (and it is a beauty!).

The brief answer came when he was asked how to get a white iPhone.

Of course, Apple has been promising the white iPhone since June 2010 and it keeps on getting delayed, so take this with a pinch of salt at the moment. We are more inclined to think that Apple will wait for the iPhone 5 (4S) electronic gadgets to be launched, perhaps in June this year.

iPhone 5 Could Get Larger Display – Or Smaller Device

15 Mar

Leaked engineering images, if real, show what could be the iPhone 5 with a larger display. Thanks to advances in technology on the iPad 2, it appears that some of the same technology can be used in the iPhone 5 display that makes the bezel needed thinner. The iPhone 4 already has a small bezel on the sides, but there’s still a few more mm of screen that could be squeezed in there.

What we see on the image above is that the screen seems to have kept the same aspect ratio and is basically just a few mm longer on the diagonal pushing it down, in proportion, to the home button.

Alternatively, Apple could use the exact same 3.5 inch Retina display, but make the casing around it smaller essentially making a smaller iPhone than before, but while still retaining the same screen size. We won’t know for sure till Apple take the stage sometime in June this year.

As for the rest of the design, if the drawings are correct we should see an almost identical device to the iPhone 4. It appears like the iPhone 5 might be a similar upgrade to what the iPad 2 was to the iPad 1… ie, a bit of speed and perhaps some slimming down.

For those of you unfamiliar with the technical drawings, Apple keeps these and makes them available publicly at launch which in turn, lets case developers have all the details they need to work with.

Can’t wait these cool electronic gadgets?
